I adored "Wither" and "Fever" is my most anticipated book of the new year. I paid $1.99 happily for this book and I don't mind paying that for a short story set in a world I love. However, I wanted to make potential buyers aware that this is a very short story that I didn't feel personally added anything to the series. There is there first six chapters of "Wither" included as well as a preview of "Fever". I didn't need to read either as I have already read 'Wither" and I dont' want to know anything about "Fever" until I dig into it upon the official release. The map is a cute little addition and the extras are two links that take readers to a behind the scenes clip of the making of the "Fever" cover and to a trailer for the first book. I felt that $1.99 was too much to ask for this short story since everything else including are merely marketing tools. If the story was more interesting I would have been happy to pay for it, but I still felt vaguely disappointed.Product details

The Seeds of Wither EBook Sampler with Exclusive Short Story The Chemical Garden Trilogy eBook Lauren DeStefano Reviews
SEEDS OF WITHER is a great mini story that prequels The Chemical Gardens' first book WITHER; with a tale of Linden's first love (and child bride) Rose. Though the short story is good and well written from Lady Rose's account, I only wish there were a bit more of it.
This kindle download of SEEDS OF WITHER also includes an enticing little gimps into the much awaited book two FEVER, due out in February of 2012 as well as the first 6 chapters of WITHER and a map of the "wives floor" of the mansion.
I just read the first two books of the Chemical Garden series, and I didn't want to stop. The next book comes out in 2/2013, so I decided to indulge in Seeds of Wither for a dollar on . I read the reviews saying it was a ripoff. I read the comments that it was just a short story told from the first wife's POV and the rest was a few chapters from Wither and a map of the wives' floor. I knew what to expect, and yet I was let down. The short story is good, mind you. Was it worth a dollar? Well, not really. I don't feel too bad, I was warned by the previous reviews. It's just a dollar, go for it if you don't mind wasting a dollar.
I have read this whole trilogy. I enjoy when a writer writes so well they draw you into their world. It's not hard to feel the desolation of being sixteen like Rhine and knowing you'll be dead by the age of twenty. Even in the light of day the tone is dark with more than a hint of sinister. The ending was bittersweet. There was one character I kind of wish had made it.
The new thing these days with these young adult trilogies is to release small stories in between novels as "teaser" for the newest book in the series. OK, I am fine with that, but the short story has to do something for me. I buy them because I love the trilogy, but when I get to the story and find out it is actually 86% (according to my ) filled with chapters from the first book (and you wouldn't be reading this short story had you NOT already read the first book), and another ~10% previews for the next book, you find yourself wondering, "Why did I buy this 7 paged snippet?"
Once you wade through the chapters from Lauren DeStefano's Wither (which you undoubtedly already read), you get to the short story First Bride, which is the reason you purchased this eBook in the first place. The story is from Rose's point of view, the first wife who was dying and Rhine and the others were a replacement for. The chapter, because for me 7 pages does not constitute any kind of short story to speak of, was certainly interesting, but it should have been incorporated as a brief introductory chapter to Wither. Its only saving grace was getting to view Linden in this light, who was always a character you struggled to like or dislike. Seeing him with Rose, the girl he truly loved, you get to see the magnitude of his grief and the devastation this virus has caused.
But still, I just can't justify this being sold separately from the original novel Wither and the new novel, Fever. I suppose if you are a Wither fan like myself, you will still buy it since you want to know everything you can about Wither. Of course, you will most likely be a little disappointed like I was. The story was interesting, but not worth the money or the effort of slogging through 50 pages of the first book... But I imagine, if you are anything like me, you are still dying to read Fever regardless of the disappointment of Seeds of Wither.
I've had this short story ever since it got published in late 2011. And now I finally read it ) And yeah, it was a whole lot shorter than I had thought. Although this ebook is more than one hundred pages, that's just because it's several chapters of Wither. Which is kind of awesome, if you don't have the book. There's also a preview of Fever, which is kind of cool. But then there is the real short story, which is only a few pages long.
The First Bride is a short story told from the point of view of Rose, Linden's first wife. We don't get that much from her. But I loved a look into her mind, even if it was at such a depressing time. We get to know some things about her before she dies. Before she get Linden to get new brides. Oh. It's depressing, because she's so sick, and all she wanted was to die in her garden. But Linden won't let her. He just don't want her to die. And I get that, but I wanted her to be able to choose for herself; not to be more tortured by Vaughn and his medicines. Sigh.
But anyway. I loved reading this from Rose's point of view. And while I don't really like Linden, I can understand why she loves him. He's kind of pathetic, and he knows nothing about his dad, but he's also kind of sweet. And he does need some protection. But yeah. I don't like him much, still. But this short story is five stars, because Rose is an amazing character. If you have read Wither, then you really should read this short story, because it is pretty amazing ) Go buy it.
